As we discussed in class, there were three core ideas guiding American
expansion at the turn of the 20th century: economic
motive, racial hierarchy, and utopian visions.
Assess these ideas, focusing particular attention on the concepts of

opponents of American imperialism. 2.
Define the terms of the debate between the Enlightened View and the
Empire Builders over American expansion across the North American continent in
late 18th to mid-19th centuries. Who
won the debate and why? 3.
Explain the impact of German Romanticism (and the American Romantic
Movement it sparked) and racial science on American thinking in the 19th
century. How did these intellectual
movements provide a justification for American expansion into Indian lands and
Mexican territory on the North American continent? |
